Computing

'Computing is becoming universal.'

Jay S. Walker

Why we teach computing

Being able to use technology competently is increasingly important to function in our modern day society, and children need be able to participate effectively in the digital world.  The computing curriculum delivered at Colliers Green will prepare them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they will need for the rest of their lives.

Learning computing supports our three school values:

  • Aspiration: loving the world by using technology to find out about the world around us.
  • Resilience: loving ourselves by persevering with our learning, even when something is challenging.
  • Community: loving our community by learning how to use a variety of different platforms to keep in touch with our loved ones.

Aims of computing curriculum

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

We ensure that there is a strong focus on e-safety at Colliers Green. E-safety is embedded within each unit of study taught in order to ensure safe and responsible use of technology.  We teach children how to keep themselves safe and to treat others with respect. Children consider how their online actions impact other people and how they need to be aware of their legal and ethical responsibilities, such as showing respect for intellectual property rights (e.g. musical, literary and artistic works), keeping passwords and personal data secure and observing the terms and conditions for web services they use such as the 13+ age restriction on sites such as Facebook.

How we teach computing at Colliers Green

At Colliers Green we follow the Purple Mash scheme of learning for computing. Purple Mash offers a wide range of creative tools, games, and resources for primary school students aged 3 to 11. It covers various subjects, including mathematics, literacy, science, computing and more, providing interactive activities and resources aligned with the National Curriculum. The platform aims to make learning fun and engaging while promoting digital literacy and critical thinking skills.
