Beech Group - Crabtastic!!
Thi week, Beech Group were introduced to the wonders of the unassuming crab apple. We discussed its appearance, its uses, its benefits, its symbolism and the folklore surrounding it. We then got to work preparing my favourite Forest School recipe of the year so that we could taste them!!
Having gone through fire safety equipment and the elements of a fire-lay (tinder, kindling & fuel) one of the children lit the fire to tremendous applause. Then the children prepared the simple ingredients needed for the toffee and washed and prepped the crab apples. Next it was time to watch and wait for the white sugary solution to transform into a thick, golden, sticky toffee ready for dunking!!
Whilst they waited the woods were a hive of activity with den building and digging,
Back at camp, the toffee had bubbled and boiled. It was gloopy and golden and ready for dipping the crab apples.
The children assembled around the campfire each with a crab apple on a skewer. We briefed them on how they could conduct the activity safely to avoid burning themselves or their friends with boiling hot toffee (approx 150 degrees C) by holding the skewer lower than their hand until the toffee had solidified and then waiting patiently until the temperature was cool enough so as not to burn their mouths.
Then it was time to pop them in and crunch! 90% of the children LOVED them and wanted seconds AND indeed thirds!! 10% ate one (to their credit) but it was not their cup of tea. A wonderful week as always with a wonderful group of children.
Recipe attached as promised!!
